Slot Multipliers Explained: Wild, Cell, Collector and Running-Total Multipliers

Almost every big slot win comes from a multiplier, but “multiplier” covers very different mechanics: a number printed on a Wild, a value that doubles every time a cell wins, a bullet that adds to a running total, or a reel that fights a duel for its value. Where the multiplier sits, how far it can grow and whether it is added or multiplied decide how a game pays. Here are the types, shown on games we have reviewed.

Multiplier types at a glance

Type How it works Example Range
Wild multiplier A Wild carries a value applied to the win it completes Lobster House, The Dog House; Boost Wilds in Tropical Wilds x2–x3 (x15–x25 in Super Free Spins)
Multiplied Wilds Several multiplier Wilds in one win multiply each other Harvest Wilds x2–x4 each, up to x256
Duel reel A full Wild reel wins a multiplier in a duel Bullets and Bounty (Hacksaw DuelReels) x2–x100
Cell multiplier A grid position doubles its value each time it is part of a win Merge Up, Merge Up 2, Sugar Merge Up x2–x128
Running total Bullets add to one multiplier that grows during a spin or a bonus Gator Hunters, Gator Hunters 2 x2–x2,000 per bullet (x3,000 in the sequel)
Collector multiplier A symbol multiplies coin values before they are collected Vikings Wild Feast; X Power Wilds in Kong Wonder Wilds x2–x20

Wild multipliers

In Lobster House every Wild on reels 2–4 shows x2 or x3, and several Wilds on one line are added: x2 + x3 = x5, three x3 Wilds = x9. In free spins the Wilds stick, so the multipliers stay on the reels for the whole round; the 400× Super Free Spins buy raises them to x15 or x25. The system comes from The Dog House (2019), where three x3 Wilds on one line also give x9 — but there is no buy to raise the values. Gator Hunters uses the same additive rule for the Wilds left by its Super Eaters (x2, x3 or x10). Whether added or multiplied Wilds suit you is covered in our Wild symbols guide.

Duel reels

Bullets and Bounty turns a VS symbol into a full Wild reel when that creates a win, and a duel picks the reel’s multiplier: x2 to x10, x15, x20, x25, x50 or x100. With Bounty VS, a Bounty Hunter starting at x2 collects the outlaw’s value and duels again, up to three times. Several duel reels in one win combine their values, which is how a low-medium volatility game still reaches 20,000×.

Cell multipliers

In the Merge Up games a cell that is part of a win is marked, and every further win on it doubles the value:

Wins on the same cell 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Cell value x2 x4 x8 x16 x32 x64 x128

The values of all cells in one cluster are added together. Where the marks last is the main difference between the games:

  • Merge Up — free spins only, kept until the round ends;
  • Merge Up 2 — also in the base game, where they reset after the spin;
  • Sugar Merge Up — the same, plus a 40× Booster that starts every cell at x16, so three more wins on a cell already reach x128.

Running totals

Gator Hunters collects multipliers in one total: every Revolver bullet that hits adds its value — from x2 up to x2,000 — and the total is applied to the win. In free spins the total carries over from spin to spin, but it pays only on spins where a Revolver hits a bullet. Gator Hunters 2 keeps the system, adds a golden x3,000 bullet and a Fire Zone that raises bullet values inside it.

A big multiplier on a small win is still a small win: x128 on a cluster that pays 0.5× the bet returns 64×. The ceiling of a game is set by its max win, not by its largest multiplier — see our max win guide.

Collector multipliers

In hold-and-respin bonuses the multiplier works on coins rather than on lines. In Vikings Wild Feast, a green clover is reported to multiply the coins next to it and a gold clover the whole grid, by x2 up to x20; a Magic Cauldron then gathers every value into one prize. The bonus tier sets the starting point: grid multipliers of x2 in the first tier, then x3, x5 and x10 in the higher ones.

What multipliers do to volatility

The bigger and rarer the multipliers, the more of a game’s return is held back for a few large hits. Gator Hunters (bullets up to x2,000) is rated extreme; Lobster House (Wilds x2–x3 in the base game) is high but triggers its bonus about twice as often. The trade-off is shown in numbers in our volatility guide.

Multipliers FAQ

What is a multiplier in a slot?
A value that multiplies a win. It can sit on a Wild, a reel, a grid cell, a coin collector or a running total.
Are Wild multipliers added or multiplied?
It depends on the game. In Lobster House and The Dog House they are added: x2 and x3 on one line give x5, not x6.
What is the largest multiplier in the games we review?
A single bullet worth x3,000 in Gator Hunters 2. Cell multipliers in the Merge Up games stop at x128.
Do multipliers increase the RTP?
No. They are part of the RTP already; they shift more of the return into rarer, bigger wins.
Does a big multiplier mean a big win?
Only on a big base win: x128 on a win of 0.5x the bet pays 64x.
