How Far Does Your Slot Budget Go? Spins, Average Loss and Bonus Odds

A slot budget is easier to manage when you count it in spins, not in euros. The same €100 is 100 spins at €1 or 200 spins at €0.50 — and that choice changes how likely you are to see a bonus round far more than it changes what you lose on average. This guide puts numbers on it, using the RTP and bonus frequencies of games we have reviewed.

Last updated: 22 October 2026

Step 1: turn the budget into spins

Budget at €0.20 at €0.50 at €1 at €2
€20 100 spins 40 20 10
€50 250 100 50 25
€100 500 200 100 50

This is the number of spins the budget covers if nothing comes back. Wins extend it, but you cannot plan on them.

Step 2: what you lose on average

The average loss depends only on the total staked and the RTP: stake × (100% − RTP). For €100 staked — whether as 100 spins at €1 or 200 at €0.50 — that is:

Slot RTP Average loss on €100 staked
Merge Up 2 98% €2.00
Merge Up 97.25% €2.75
Lobster House 96.51% €3.49
The Dog House 96.51% €3.49
Gator Hunters 96.11% €3.89
Gator Hunters 2 96.00% €4.00

Those averages are small, but they describe the long run. In one session the result swings far around them — which is why the next step matters more.

Step 3: will you see the bonus?

For games that pay most of their return in free spins, the real question is whether your spins are enough to reach the bonus at all. Here is the chance of no free spins in 100 and in 200 spins:

Slot Bonus about 1 in No bonus in 100 spins No bonus in 200 spins Average bonuses in 200 spins
Lobster House 112 40.78% 16.63% 1.79
The Dog House 180 57.37% 32.91% 1.11
Gator Hunters 2 205 61.32% 37.61% 0.98
Gator Hunters 236 65.40% 42.77% 0.85
Merge Up 276 69.56% 48.39% 0.72
Merge Up 2 409 78.29% 61.29% 0.49

The practical conclusion: €100 on Gator Hunters at €1 per spin leaves a 65.40% chance of never seeing free spins; the same €100 at €0.50 cuts that to 42.77% — with the same average loss of €3.89. A smaller stake does not make the game cheaper, but it buys more chances to reach the part of the game that pays.

The tables assume every spin is independent, which is how RNG slots work. A long run without a bonus does not make the next spin more likely to trigger one.

Step 4: set limits before you start

  • Loss limit — the amount you are ready to lose, decided before the first spin. When it is gone, the session ends.
  • Time limit — at 2.5 seconds per spin (the minimum in Great Britain) 200 spins take a little over 8 minutes; long sessions add up fast.
  • Stake — pick the stake from the number of spins you want, not the other way round. In Great Britain the maximum is £5 per spin (£2 for ages 18–24) — the other UK slot rules are summarised separately.
  • No chasing — never raise the stake to win back losses.

Licensed casinos offer deposit limits, reality checks, cool-off and self-exclusion. If gambling stops being fun, free and confidential help is available from GamCare, GambleAware or Gambling Therapy.

How RTP versions change the average loss is explained in our RTP versions guide, and bonus frequency across more games in our volatility guide.

Slot budget FAQ

How many spins do I get from €100?
500 at €0.20, 200 at €0.50, 100 at €1 and 50 at €2, if nothing comes back.
How much do I lose on average?
Total staked times (100% minus RTP): €3.49 on €100 staked at 96.51%.
Does a lower stake reduce the average loss?
Not for the same total staked. It gives you more spins, and therefore a better chance of reaching the bonus.
Is a bonus due after a long run without one?
No. Every spin is independent; past spins do not change the odds of the next one.
Where can I get help with gambling?
GamCare, GambleAware and Gambling Therapy offer free, confidential support.
