A Wild substitutes for other symbols — that part is the same everywhere. What differs from game to game is what else the Wild does: carry a multiplier, stay on the reels, grow over a whole reel or appear only when something else happens. Those extra rules decide how a slot pays far more than the Wild itself. Below are the main types, each shown on a game we have reviewed.

The main Wild types at a glance
| Type | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Multiplier Wild | Substitutes and multiplies the win it is part of | Lobster House: x2 or x3 on every Wild |
| Sticky Wild | Stays in place for several spins, usually until a bonus ends | Lobster House free spins |
| Expanding Wild | Grows to cover its whole reel | Miss Cherry Fruits (with a respin), Super Fruits Wild, 3 Buzzing Wilds |
| Walking Wild | Moves one reel per respin, often growing as it goes | Better Wilds Special Wilds |
| Wild reel from a special symbol | A feature symbol turns its reel Wild and adds a multiplier | Bullets and Bounty DuelReels, up to x100 |
| Wild created by another feature | Appears only after a different mechanic fires | Gator Hunters Eaters; the Mystery Box in Tropical Wilds; the spreading werewolf in Werewolf Wild |
Multiplier Wilds: added or multiplied?
When two multiplier Wilds sit in the same win, the game either adds their values or multiplies them, and the difference is large:
- two x3 Wilds, added: ×6;
- two x3 Wilds, multiplied: ×9;
- three x3 Wilds: ×9 added against ×27 multiplied.
Lobster House adds them: its Wilds on reels 2–4 always show x2 or x3, so a single line can reach ×9 in the base game. The Super Eater Wilds in Gator Hunters (x2, x3 or x10) are also added together within a win. Added multipliers keep wins more predictable; multiplied ones create rarer, much larger hits.
Sticky Wilds
A sticky Wild stays where it landed for the following spins. In Lobster House every Wild that lands during free spins stays until the last spin and keeps its multiplier, so a round that catches Wilds early gets steadily more valuable. The catch: the round has a fixed length (9–27 spins) and cannot be retriggered, so a round that catches none pays little.
Sticky Wilds make a bonus uneven: the result depends heavily on the first few spins. A bought round on such a game can pay far below its price.
Expanding Wilds
An expanding Wild grows to fill its reel, which turns one symbol into three, four or five Wild positions. In Miss Cherry Fruits the expansion also gives one respin with the Wild reel held; a new Wild during the respin adds another, up to three in a row. Combined with lines that pay in both directions, a single Wild reel in the middle can complete wins from both sides.
In Super Fruits Wild the Wild expands only on reels 2–4 and carries no multiplier and no respin; its value comes from Inspired’s Hot Spins gamble, where a Wild that lands on one of four reel sets is copied onto the others.
Walking Wilds
A walking Wild moves across the grid during a respin sequence instead of staying put. In Better Wilds the green diamond Special Wild lands on reels 3–5, triggers a respin and moves one reel to the left on each one; from the second respin it also grows by one row. The sequence lasts while a diamond is still on screen, so a Wild that lands on reel 5 gives the longest run.
Respins triggered by Wilds are compared with other respin features in our respins guide.
Wild reels from special symbols
Some games keep the Wild out of the regular symbol set and create it through a feature symbol. In Bullets and Bounty a VS or Bounty VS symbol expands into a full Wild reel only when that creates a win, and a duel decides the reel’s multiplier: from x2 to x100 for VS, or a Bounty Hunter who collects outlaw multipliers in up to three duels. Several DuelReels in one win combine their multipliers.
Wilds created by other features
In Gator Hunters a Wild usually appears only when a spin has produced nothing: an Eater removes random symbols and turns into a Wild, and a Super Eater becomes a Wild with x2, x3 or x10. Here the Wild is a rescue mechanic for dead spins rather than a regular reel symbol.
