A slot demo lets you spin with play credits before risking money. It is the best way to learn a game’s rules — and a poor way to judge how it pays. A demo session is far too short to show a game’s RTP, may run a different version of the maths from your casino, and in some markets offers features the real-money game does not. Here is what free play can and cannot tell you, with numbers from games we have reviewed.

What a demo is good for
- Learning the rules. How the Wilds behave, what starts the bonus, what the buttons do. Ten minutes in a demo beat any amount of reading for a game with as many parts as Bullets and Bounty.
- Seeing the pace. Cascading games such as Merge Up take longer per spin than a five-line fruit slot; a demo shows how a session will feel.
- Watching a bonus. Where the demo offers a buy, you can see the bonus round without waiting for it.
- Checking the help screen. RTP, max win and feature rules are there in the demo too.
What a demo cannot tell you
Whether the game pays well
A few hundred spins say almost nothing about RTP. Results swing too widely, and the bonus — where high-volatility games pay most of their return — may not appear at all. The chance of seeing no free spins in a 100-spin demo:
| Slot | Free spins about 1 in | No bonus in 100 demo spins |
|---|---|---|
| Lobster House | 112 | 40.78% |
| The Dog House | 180 | 57.37% |
| Gator Hunters | 236 | 65.40% |
| Merge Up 2 | 409 | 78.29% |
A demo that never reached the bonus has not shown you the game. One that reached it twice in 100 spins was lucky — it does not mean the real-money game will do the same. Why bonus frequency and volatility shape a session more than RTP is explained in our volatility guide.
Which RTP version you will get
Many studios ship one game in several RTP versions, and the casino chooses which one to run. The demo on a studio’s site or a review site runs one of them; it is not necessarily the one at your casino. Lobster House, for example, exists at 96.51%, 95.51% and 94.50%. Always check the help screen of the real-money game — our RTP versions guide shows where.
Whether the bonus buy is available
A demo from another market may show a “Buy Bonus” button that your casino does not offer — UK-licensed casinos have no buys at all (UK slot rules). Seeing the bonus in a demo buy also hides how long you would wait for it in normal play.
Demo wins do not predict anything. Every spin is independent, in free play and for money; a “hot” demo is not a sign that the game is about to pay.
Demos at UK casinos
Since 7 May 2019, UK-licensed operators must verify your age before you can open free-to-play versions of their gambling games. That is why a UK casino asks for verification before it shows you a demo. Whatever the site, slot demos are meant for adults only.
How to use a demo well
- Read the help screen first: RTP, max win, bonus rules.
- Play long enough to see each feature once — use a demo buy if there is one.
- Note how often small wins come and how long the dry spells are.
- Before playing for money, turn the budget into a number of spins (see our slot budget guide) and compare it with the bonus frequency.
Our reviews of Bullets and Bounty, Lobster House and the other games list the figures a demo will not show you.
